It is not uncommon for teachers to reprimand students for forgetting to do their schoolwork. However, while it is true that the student is subject to the authority of the school as long as he or she is within the school premises, it does not mean that the academic freedom given to teachers should extend to meting out unreasonable disciplinary sanctions. Just recently, an elementary student in Indonesia was punished for forgetting his homework, but his teacher’s choice of punishment was beyond despicable.
According to a report by the website Next Shark, the Indonesian student was forced to lick a dirty toilet 12 times because he forgot to bring his homework.
The incident reportedly happened at Cempedak Lobang State Elementary School in Serdang Bedagai district, North Sumatra province in Indonesia.
When the student’s father learned about the cruel punishment, he immediately went to the school to complain about the teacher. However, the latter was merely given a ‘sanction’ and was transferred to a different school.
Joni Walker Manik, the head of Sergei Bedagai Regency Education Board, confirmed that the disgusting punishment really did happen.
Manik explained:
“Based on our investigation, the teacher in question punished the student for not doing his work. We have sanctioned her by transferring her to a public elementary school in Tebing Tinggi.”
He further said that the teacher is also human who can sometimes make mistakes. However, he clarified that they are not defending her, and that they are giving her counseling and a sanction for her actions.
Netizens were shocked to hear about the incident, with most of them expressing their anger over what happened:
According to the mother, her son was told to lick the toilet 12 times, but he vomited after the fourth time. “My husband stormed into the school to meet with the teacher. I’m angry, upset. How are there no other punishments?” she said.
