We’re all familiar with twins, the identical who looked exactly like each other and the fraternal twins who don’t look like each other. What we’re unfamiliar with is the case of twins having different fathers.
Is it really possible for twins to have different fathers? Sounds impossible, but it’s not. There’s this case known as the bi-paternal twins who has recently shocked the netizens!
For privacy purposes, the identities of the parents were hidden as part of the confidentiality clause with the Genetic Association of Vietnam.
According to Elite Readers, for two years since their babies were born, the Vietnamese couple from Hoa Binh was questioned because their children looked different. At first, they thought that it was just a case of fraternal twins, but then, as time flies, they realized that it’s not.
AS the children grew up, their differences became more striking that the other child ended up having thick wavy hair while the other one has thin straight hair. One of the children has no resemblances to the father at all! It was then when the man decided to do a DNA test.
The President of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, Le Dinh Luong, was shocked when he found out hat the children have different fathers. It was a rare case of Bi-paternal twins which is the first case in Vietnam.
Scientists explained that it is possible that the woman had more than one sexual partners during the time of her ovulation, coincidentally released more than one egg cell.
Egg cells can survive for two days while sperm cells can survive for 7-10 days inside the woman’s body.
It is possible for them to have different fathers in a phenomenon called the heteropaternal superfecundation that occurs when two of a woman’s eggs are fertilized by sperm from two different men.
Ordinarily, the woman became pregnant because one of her eggs has been fertilized by a sperm.
In this case, the woman released multiple eggs within a week of one another and within that narrow time frame, the eggs have been fertilized by two different men.
